Is DIY estate planning a good idea?

Numerous Missouri residents like to do things for themselves rather than consult certain professionals. Being a DIYer is okay for some things, but for others, it is not the best idea. Take estate planning, for instance. Putting together an estate plan may seem like a simple enough task, but really, there is a lot involved. If you fail to do it correctly, it could cause a lot of problems down the line.

There are numerous websites out there that offer DIY estate planning programs. They seem simple enough to use. It is a matter of answering a few questions, filling in some blanks and hitting the submit button. They also seem to cost less than traditional estate planning. Sounds great, right?

There are many problems with these programs, though, that many people may not think about. For example, they are not state specific. Every state treats estate matters differently, so having an estate plan that is specific to one's state of residence is a must. Another problem is that the cost to create a DIY plan may seem insignificant, but the real cost -- the cost to one's loved ones -- may be greater than one could possibly imagine. This makes the potential cost savings far from worthwhile.

Putting together an estate plan is not necessarily difficult. However, if you are going to go through the estate planning process, wouldn't you rather know for sure that the final product offers you, your assets and your loved ones the protection you desire? To learn how an experienced Missouri-based attorney can help you prepare an estate plan that actually fits your needs, please take a moment and visit our firm's website.
