- Landscaping – Pay attention to weeds, overgrown grass and an unkempt lawn. Such overlooked details can necessitate action by the homeowner’s association. Check the bylaws and if they specify what types of trees, plants and shrubs can and cannot be in the front yard.
- Trash receptacles – Many HOA’s have guidelines governing trash cans. Their presence can invite pests and make the neighborhood less attractive. Confirm whether there are prohibitions on how early you can take them to the street and if you must retrieve them before a particular time.
- Vehicles – Review the requirements for homeowner vehicles, those of your guests and vendors. If automobiles must be off the street by a specific hour/time, such as dusk. You will need to ensure the vendor completes work before that time. Some HOA’s may require permits for guests staying in the neighborhood for extended visits.
- Occupancy limits – If you wish to rent a room in your home, check the latest version of the guidelines. Many community groups have rules about the maximum number of people residing in a home.
